OVERVIEW

This renovation completely re-imagined a cornerstone in the Holland community, equipping the library with new study rooms, maker space, and children’s zones. A three-story floating staircase with natural light and a fireplace reading nook became the heart of the project, combining accessibility, creativity, and craftsmanship in a vibrant community centerpiece.

DESCRIPTION

A cornerstone of the Holland community, the Herrick District Library was in desperate need of a comprehensive renovation and re-imagining. From regular water intrusion issues to restricted people movement to spaces that no longer met the needs of their patrons, the community was ready for something new. The Lakewood team provided a complete design-build process for Herrick—tailoring designs around maximizing sightlines, natural light, and incorporating design elements that speak to the local culture and community.

Key components of this project include new collaboration, study, and meeting rooms, open technology and creation spaces, reading areas, teen spaces, and office space. The project also included significant and complex work on structural elements including new people flow, relocation of the main 3-floor staircase, correcting structural and roof seam issues, and mitigating water intrusion.

The Lakewood Carpentry team built and finished maple panels throughout the library to match the existing woodwork and aesthetics to keep a rich natural feel to the space.

“Lakewood staff were indispensable in the design phase. They took time to listen carefully to us and help us think through areas that were not on our radar. They helped us prioritize the project, were responsive to all our needs and questions, and most importantly, offered thoughtful solutions within our scope and budget.”- Diane Kooiker, Library Director

Overview

The Outdoor Discovery Center (ODC), a premier outdoor education and conservation organization in West Michigan, sought to expand its network of their popular early childhood outdoor learning centers. After selecting a new venue, the ODC and Lakewood Construction teamed up to begin a long standing partnership.

The original building was kept, providing the structure for the project, while the inside was completely demoed and built out. The site underwent significant upgrades, including the remodeling of the parking lot to accommodate the creation of outdoor classrooms. The new facility features five classrooms designed for children from infancy to age five, each equipped with age-appropriate bathrooms and kitchenettes. Additional spaces include a conference room, storage/curriculum room, break room, laundry room, and an open meeting area.

The highlight of the project is the outdoor learning playground, designed with unique equipment and a thoughtful layout to support outdoor education programming. The playground’s standout features include striking exterior canopies crafted from heavy timber.

The building also incorporates sustainable elements, such as an Energy Recovery Ventilation (ERV) system installed on the roof. The ERV works alongside the ODC’s conservation efforts to exchange the energy contained in normally exhausted air of a building, using it to treat (preconditioned) incoming outdoor ventilation air.

Overview

When National Bulk Equipment (NBE) and Brawn Mixer decided to renovate their headquarters in Holland, MI, they turned to their trusted partner, Lakewood Construction. NBE, a leading provider of advanced material handling and processing systems, had previously worked with us on a facility addition in 2023. This time, they looked to us to renovate their breakroom spaces and build additional bathroom facilities.

Employees at NBE faced challenges with inaccessible bathrooms located far from their workstations and a breakroom that was both uninviting and noisy. To address these issues, we constructed new bathrooms and locker rooms that were accessible to their workspace. The breakroom was completely refreshed with updated floors, ceilings, paint, and more. In order to alleviate the noise levels, we collaborated with the client to explore options. We found a solution using insulation spray, that while differing from the client’s original plan, was able to bring more efficient noise cancellation.

The impact of these renovations were felt immediately. With improved facilities, employee morale and productivity increased. NBE celebrated the upgrades by hosting an event in their newly revitalized space immediately upon completion.

Overview

Magna International manufactures high-end components and systems that require tremendous accuracy and quality PPM. Magna has been a Lakewood partner for decades because they know that when tolerances are tight and accuracy is mission-critical, Lakewood has them covered.

Our architecture team worked to design an addition that optimally integrates into existing facilities and increases efficiency. Through internal design-build processes, we are able to communicate the intricate and specific design features quickly and easily- ensuring a seamless transition from concept to procurement.

The addition created much needed storage space at the home site for materials that were previously stored off campus. The addition needed unique specifications in order for Magna to store their precious materials with peace of mind. Lakewood was able to meet their needs while remaining on schedule, and on budget, all while facing supply chain shortages.

Overview

SoundOff Signal, a leading manufacturer of emergency vehicle lighting, sirens, and electronic warning systems, is renowned for its cutting-edge products and technology- and is rapidly growing every year. To meet the needs of their growing staff, they decided to expand their office space by building out their empty mezzanine area. When deciding who to work with, Lakewood’s record of proven excellence and strong partnerships made it an easy choice.

The mezzanine space, originally intended for storage needs, was turned into new offices, meeting rooms, and collaborative space. While building, we worked hard to ensure that the floor space remained extremely clean so as not to impact operations. Building in an occupied space brings the challenge of multiple moving parts. While creating new office space for over 60 people in the expansion, the current personnel had to be moved around. The old offices were then built out to increase optimization and make room for SoundOff Signal’s increasing employment numbers.

SoundOff Signal’s emphasis on collaboration inspired a lot of the design process, and heavily influenced their choice to design-build. With 4 new meeting rooms overlooking the floor, the office staff can actually see the people and products that they are discussing which helps blend the gap between roles.

Overview

SoundOff Signal is a leading manufacturer of emergency vehicle lighting, sirens, and electronic warning systems. Known for their innovative products and technology, SoundOff Signal serves both domestic and international markets, focusing on enhancing vehicle visibility and safety. For a world class company that continues to grow, they needed a space to match their increasing demands.

The Innovation Suite was needed to provide a space for top engineers and designers to workshop, brainstorm, and create. Moving from their current space in cramped cubicles, we focused on creating an open and collaborative suite. What started as a workshop space, grew to become a showcase piece for clients, sales teams, and employees alike.

Throughout the project, we employed a design-build approach, working alongside those who would ultimately be using the space. When presented with unique, client-specific design concepts, we embraced the challenge and delivered creative solutions. From lights that resembled clouds, to a circular engagement hub, through the design-build process our architects was able to translate the vision to our field team which allowed for an easy path of internal communication to ensure nothing was missed.

Part of a larger $2M project, the Innovation Suite is a crown jewel sitting at the world headquarters for SoundOff Signal in Hudsonville, MI. Just under 1,200 sf, the project was designed to be a final build and serve the company for many years.

Overview

Challenges:

  • Build in a new state while headquartered in Holland, MI.
  • Invest in new relationships with trade-contractors.
  • Create new relationships with the local municipalities and service providers.

FROM WEST MICHIGAN TO THE WESTERN US

The Stow Company is a closet and storage solution manufacturer, headquartered out of Holland, Michigan. Since the company was founded over 30 years ago, they have seen tremendous growth. This growth has resulted in a longstanding relationship with Lakewood Construction, having partnered on numerous projects over the last 10 years to continue their expansion.

As Stow continues to experience exponential growth, they knew they needed a way to better serve their customers on the western half of the United States and to do that, they needed to build a manufacturing hub out west.

After acquiring land in Nampa, Idaho, Stow made the decision to present Lakewood Construction with the opportunity to follow them out West and design and build their new facility. The Stow Company attributed their choice of foregoing getting multiple bids and going directly to Lakewood Construction, to their proven history of success together and trust in the Lakewood team to guide them in creating a facility to support their continued growth. The Lakewood team eagerly accepted and began integrating themselves into the Nampa community to ensure this projects success.

The Lakewood Architecture team worked closely with the project owners, our own construction team, E3M solutions, Megan Murray Interiors, and Holland Engineering to ensure the project was planned with the right expertise.

The new facility will include 20,000 sf of office space and 520,000 sf of manufacturing space. The addition of this space will not only allow them to continue to grow, it will also allow them to better serve their Western U.S. based clientele. The construction for this project began in February of 2022, and was completed on time and on budget in June of 2023.
